THE MISSION OF HAYS CISD IS TO EDUCATE, VALUE AND NURTURE STUDENTS THROUGH INNOVATIVE AND PERSONALIZED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES WHILE CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY. THANK YOU, MR. VELA. OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM IS OUR SOCIAL CONTRACT, WHICH WILL BE READ BY BOARD OF TRUSTEE WILL MCMANUS.

GOOD EVENING. I WANTED TO START OUT JUST BY SAYING THAT I APPRECIATE HOW HARD YOU ALL WORK TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR KIDS.

SO I KNOW HOW HARD YOU WORK, AND WE REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT.

SO I'M HERE TONIGHT FOR TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

THE FIRST ONE I WANTED TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION IS HOW INTERVENTION SERVICES FOR DYSLEXIC STUDENTS ARE BEING DELIVERED AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL.

SO IT WAS RECENTLY BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT IF A STUDENT WANTS TO RECEIVE OR NEEDS TO RECEIVE DYSLEXIA SERVICES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, THEY HAVE TO FORFEIT AN ELECTIVE TO RECEIVE THOSE SERVICES.

AND STUDENTS SHOULD NOT NEED TO FORFEIT AN ELECTIVE TO GET INTERVENTION.

AS A FIFTH GRADE TEACHER WHO'S ALSO SPECIAL EDUCATION CERTIFIED AND A MOM OF A STUDENT WHO NEEDS TO CONTINUE DYSLEXIA SERVICES.

I'M VERY CONCERNED AND DISAPPOINTED IN THAT BEING THEIR ONLY OPTION.

AND I'M COMING TO Y'ALL TONIGHT TO SEE IF WE CAN COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.

SO IF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE RECEIVING INTERVENTION DON'T HAVE TO MISS OUT ON ANY ELECTIVES.

I KNOW AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, A LOT OF THE CAMPUSES HAVE INTERVENTION TIME WORKED INTO THEIR SCHEDULE.

AND I WOULD JUST LIKE FOR YOU ALL TO LOOK AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHEDULES AND SEE IF THAT'S SOMETHING YOU ALL COULD WORK IN.

THE OTHER THING I WANTED TO MENTION IS THAT COURSE SELECTION SHEETS ARE COMING OUT SOON FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL.

AND SO MOST OF THESE FIFTH GRADERS I AM A FIFTH GRADE TEACHER AT ELM GROVE.

THEY DON'T REALIZE THAT THEY'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO TAKE TWO ELECTIVES.

SO WHEN THEY'RE IN THEIR CLASSES AND THEY'RE TALKING TO THEIR FRIENDS AND THEIR TEACHERS ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT TO DO FOR CLASSES IN MIDDLE SCHOOL THEY'RE GOING TO BE SURPRISED WHEN THEY GET THERE AND THEY DON'T GET TO DO TWO ELECTIVES LIKE THEIR CLASSMATES.

AND SO THE SECOND REASON I'M HERE IS I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE DYSLEXIA PROGRAM IN THE DISTRICT.

IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE PROGRAM Y'ALL FOLLOW IS BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS, WHICH IS A ORTON-GILLINGHAM BASED PROGRAM.

I'M NOT A DYSLEXIA TEACHER.

I HAVEN'T BEEN TRAINED IN THE PROGRAM, BUT I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH AND I'VE SPOKEN WITH SEVERAL TEACHERS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT AND OUTSIDE OF OUR DISTRICT THAT UTILIZE THE PROGRAM. SO BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS IS DESIGNED TO BE TAUGHT BY A CERTIFIED ACADEMIC LANGUAGE THERAPIST.

THE LESSON SHOULD BE DELIVERED IN 50 TO 60 MINUTE INCREMENTS.

IT IS A 2 TO 3 YEAR PROGRAM.

THERE'S THREE TOTAL BOOKS THAT THE STUDENTS GO THROUGH, AND IDEALLY THOSE GROUPS ARE 3 TO 5 STUDENTS WITH A MAX OF 6 TO 8 STUDENTS.

SO MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE DYSLEXIA SERVICES THAT MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN RECEIVING AT THE DISTRICT, SHE IS ABOUT TO FINISH YEAR FOUR.

AND START YEAR FIVE OF RECEIVING DYSLEXIA INTERVENTION.

SHE RECEIVES INTERVENTION FOUR DAYS A WEEK FOR 45 MINUTES AT A TIME, AND HER GROUP CURRENTLY HAS EIGHT STUDENTS.

SO THAT'S CONCERNING AS A PARENT, WHEN THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR 2 TO 3 YEARS AND YOUR CHILD IS ABOUT TO START THEIR FIFTH YEAR.

SO I WOULD LIKE THE BOARD TO LOOK INTO IF THE DISTRICT IS UTILIZING THE PROGRAM TO FIDELITY.

AND IF NOT, WHAT CHANGES THEY CAN MAKE.

SO DYSLEXIA STUDENTS CAN HAVE THE BEST OUTCOME.

AND I THINK THAT'S IT.

WE REALLY WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT ONE OF THE VERY BEST THINGS AT OUR CAMPUS AND THAT'S OUR STUDENTS.

MARIACHI IS ONE OF THE LARGEST PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE.

IT'S CONSTANTLY A THRIVING PROGRAM AND SO WE JUST WANTED TO STOP AND PAUSE AND CELEBRATE THEM FOR A MINUTE.

I'M THE BOYS ATHLETIC COORDINATOR.

I HAVE BEEN THERE SINCE YEAR ONE OF SIMON'S.

SO THIS IS YEAR 14 FOR MYSELF.

THE MISSION OF SIMON MIDDLE SCHOOL IS THE MISSION OF SIMON MIDDLE SCHOOL A DIVERSE, PIONEERING COMMUNITY BUILT ON RELATIONSHIPS AND ACCEPTANCE IS TO SCULPT AND CULTIVATE MOTIVATED CONTRIBUTING CITIZENS THROUGH BOTH SUCCESS AND FAILURE, WHILE BROADENING HORIZONS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE.

OUR EFFECTIVE SCHOOL FRAMEWORK LEVERS FOR FOCUS THIS YEAR WERE OUR LEVER THREE POSITIVE SCHOOL CULTURE, LEVER FOUR HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND ASSESSMENTS, AND LEVER FIVE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION.

LIKE YOU SAW WITH OUR KIDS, A LOT OF STUFF IS OUR SCHOOL, STUDENT DRIVEN.

I THINK ONE THING THAT NEEDS TO BE MENTIONED IS A LOT OF THESE KIDS BACK HERE, IT'S NOT JUST MARIACHI FOR THEM.

THEY'RE A PART OF SO MANY DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN OUR SCHOOL AND WE HAVE SO MANY CROSSOVERS THAT WE SHARE THAT THEY GET TO DO SO MUCH THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SCHOOL.

SO I THINK THAT'S VERY POSITIVE OF THEM AND IT'S A LOT OF GOES TO SHOW FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION THAT THEY DO THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

SO AS SIMON I'M TALKING ALSO ABOUT OUR STUDENTS.

IF YOU'LL GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

WE ARE NEARING SOME OF THE HIGHEST AVERAGES WE'VE EVER HAD IN OUR BUILDING, ALONG WITH THE GROWING DISTRICT THAT WE ARE.

SO WE ARE ABOUT 755 STUDENTS NOW.

WE HAVE A LOT OF DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS THAT WE HAVE ON OUR CAMPUS.

ONE THING THAT WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF, SO OVER HALF OF OUR CAMPUS IS EMERGENT BILINGUALS.

WE HOUSE ONE OF THE NEWCOMER PROGRAMS FOR THE DISTRICT ALONG NOW WITH CHAPA.

AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE ALWAYS REALLY HELD CLOSE AT SIMON THAT WE ARE PROUD THAT WE CAN PROVIDE THAT SERVICE TO OUR STUDENTS.

NEXT SLIDE. WITH THE STUDENTS COMING IN BECAUSE WE DO SERVE SUCH A DIVERSE POPULATION AND THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT LEARNING NEEDS ON OUR CAMPUS.

WE NEED IT TO BE STRATEGIC IN HOW WE BUILT OUR MASTER SCHEDULE TO BEST SUPPORT THEM ACADEMICALLY.

AND SO WE DO HAVE A LOT OF PUSH IN SUPPORT, WHETHER IT'S FROM DYSLEXIA OR SPECIAL EDUCATION OR OUR TEACHERS AND OUR NEWCOMERS.

THEY ALL PUSH INTO THE CLASSROOM TO HELP SUPPORT.

SO MANY OF OUR CLASSROOMS WE HAVE TWO AND THREE TEACHERS SUPPORTING STUDENTS SO THAT WE CAN REALLY GET TO THOSE SMALL GROUPS AND PROVIDE THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT THEY NEED.

NEXT. WITH THAT SAID, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MR. FRANK DELEON, OUR MARIACHI DIRECTOR, TO JUST KIND OF EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT OF HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO US THAT WE SUPPORT THE STUDENT AT SIMON ACADEMICALLY, BUT ALSO THE WHOLE CHILD, AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY ARE INVOLVED IN THINGS OUTSIDE OF JUST THE CLASSROOM.

GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS FRANK DELEON AND I'M THE MARIACHI INSTRUCTOR AT SIMON MIDDLE SCHOOL.

I'VE BEEN THERE FOR WELL, THIS IS MY NINTH YEAR AT SIMON.

I CAN SAY THAT IN THE PAST NINE YEARS, WE'VE DEFINITELY BEEN ON A ROLLER COASTER.

AND THE CULTURE IS REALLY, REALLY REACHING A POINT TO WHERE TO WHERE THE ATMOSPHERE IS MORE FAMILY ORIENTED.

AND I THINK THAT IS ALL PART OF TEACHING THE WHOLE CHILD IS THAT WE ARE PARTNERS WITH THE PARENTS IN EVERYTHING THAT WE DO.

I CAN THINK ABOUT EVERY SUMMER OR EVERY TIME WE COME BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER SUMMER AND I SEE THE THE STUDENTS, THEY ALWAYS COME IN AND THEY'RE A LITTLE BIT DARKER, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE A LITTLE BIT DARKER THAN THEY WERE WHEN THEY LEFT AND THEIR HANDS ARE ROUGHER THAN MINE.

AND IT'S BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE A UNIQUE SITUATION AT SIMON TO WHERE OVER THE SUMMER A LOT OF OUR KIDS ARE WORKING.

THEY'RE WORKING THE WHOLE SUMMER, YOU KNOW, JUST TO HELP MAKE ENDS MEET.

AND SO THE IDEA BEHIND TEACHING THE WHOLE CHILD FOR US, I BELIEVE, IS THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TIME IN OUR DAY SET ASIDE FOR US TO BE ABLE TO GET TO KNOW THE STUDENTS ON A PERSONAL LEVEL AND GET TO KNOW THIS, THAT THEY'RE WORKING AT HOME.

LIKE ONE STUDENT THAT I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW CAN HE CAN HE RIGHT NOW TELL US HOW TO FIGURE OUT THE AREA OF OF A SQUARE OR TRIANGLE? I'M NOT SURE. BUT HE CAN TELL YOU BY LOOKING AT A YARD HOW MANY BAGS OF LEAVES HE'S GOING TO BE ABLE TO COLLECT FROM THAT YARD.

AND SO IT GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY EXPLORE OUR TEACHING HABITS AND JUST THE WAY THAT WE TEACH TO FIGURE OUT HOW ARE WE GOING TO BRIDGE THAT, HOW ARE WE GOING TO SCAFFOLD, YOU KNOW, FROM WHAT THEY'RE DOING AT HOME EVERY DAY INTO, YOU KNOW, INTO THE CLASSROOM AND INTO WHAT DOES AFFECT OUR SCORES. SO I REALLY DO FEEL LIKE WHAT WE'RE DOING IS WORKING.

EVERY FRIDAY WE HAVE SOMETHING CALLED THE SIMON SHOWCASE.

THIS IS A TIME OF THE DAY, AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE DAY THAT WE SHOWCASE DIFFERENT PARTS OF OUR SCHOOL, FROM OUR STUDENTS TO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS TO SOMEBODY THAT ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING THAT WEEK OR THE WEEK BEFORE.

AS YOU SEE UP HERE, WE HAVE A COUPLE OF VIDEOS.

WHAT WE DO IS WE LINE UP THE KIDS IN THE HALLWAY AND THEY WALK THE HALLS.

EVERY OTHER STUDENT COMES OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.

THEY'RE OUT IN THE HALL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE STUDENTS, TO CELEBRATE THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ; FROM MARIACHI TO ART TO BASKETBALL TO THE CHEERLEADERS ARE TWO OF OUR BASKETBALL TEAMS, WON THIS PAST WEEK. AND ON FRIDAY, THEY GOT TO WALK THE HALLS AND CELEBRATE THEIR VICTORIES.

ANY TIME WE GET TO CELEBRATE OUR STUDENTS, WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT BECAUSE THAT IS THE WHOLE STUDENT.

BY GETTING THESE SMALL SUCCESSES, THEY'RE GOING TO THRIVE OFF OF IT AND JUST WANT TO DO BETTER AND BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

AND I THINK THIS IS JUST ONE OF MANY THINGS THAT WE DO THAT REALLY SHOWCASES THEM TO THE POINT THAT THEY WANT TO DO BETTER THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

OTHER EXAMPLES MIGHT BE IF WE HAVE SOMEONE WITH AN ENGINEERING LICENSE, WHICH IS VERY RIGOROUS LICENSE TO HAVE AND THEY WANT TO TEACH IN AN ENGINEERING CLASS, THEN WE WOULD DOI THEM.

ALL OF THESE SCENARIOS THAT I JUST LISTED FOR YOU WOULD ENTER WHAT WE'RE CALLING JUST THE PATHWAY TO CERTIFICATION, MEANING IT'S NOT A ONE AND DONE THING.

IT DOESN'T MEAN WE JUST HIRE YOU AND THEN THAT'S IT.

NO, THERE WOULD BE SOME FOLLOW THROUGH ON THAT.

WE WOULD HAVE A PATHWAY TOWARDS CERTIFICATION IMMEDIATELY UPON HIRE.

THEY WOULD GET ENROLLED IN AN ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM AND WE WOULD BEGIN TO WALK THEM THROUGH THAT PROCESS.

SO IT'S A ROAD FOR US TO GET THEM IN AND THEN TO GET THEM CERTIFIED.

I DID WORK WITH CTE WITH SUSIE MITCHELL ON THIS DOCUMENT A LITTLE BIT OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.

AND CURRENTLY WE DO NOT HAVE A REQUIREMENT TO HAVE OUR TEACHER CERTIFIED IN CTE COURSES WHERE OUR STUDENTS GET MATH AND SCIENCE CREDIT.

IN THE DOI IF THE CAMPUS DECIDED THAT THAT'S THE ROUTE THAT THEY WANT TO GO TO, WHAT THEY WOULD DO IS NOTIFY HR.

WE WOULD IMMEDIATELY LET DR.

WRIGHT KNOW WE'VE GOT A CAMPUS WANTING TO SEEK A DOI UNDER A PARTICULAR AREA, MATH, SCIENCE OR LOTE, AND HE WOULD GIVE US THE GREEN LIGHT TO MOVE FORWARD.

THE CAMPUS WILL BE DIRECTED NOT TO INTERVIEW PEOPLE THAT DO NOT MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SO THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INTERVIEW THEM UNTIL THEY GET THE GO FROM DR.

WRIGHT. AND WE WOULD WORK WITH THE ACADEMICS OFFICE, THE DIOS WHO OVERSEE AND SUPERVISE AND EVALUATE THE PRINCIPALS TO ENSURE THAT, IN FACT, THERE IS A NEED.

IN FACT, THEY'VE GONE THROUGH THE SCREENING PROCESSES AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND SOMEONE.

SO IF IT'S SOMEONE IN MATH, WE WOULD HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE FOR MATH, SCIENCE OR LOTE OR CTE.

ONCE THE COMMITTEE SCREENS THEM AND GIVES US THE GO AHEAD, WE WOULD LET THE CAMPUS THEN KNOW YOU MAY PROCEED WITH HIRING.

AND JUST THAT ALONE TIGHTENS UP EVEN OUR EXISTING CTE PROCESSES.

SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT PROCESS AND GETTING US TO THINK A LITTLE BIT DEEPER AROUND THIS WHOLE DOI.

AND THEN FROM THERE, IF THEY GET APPROVED AT THE CAMPUS LEVEL, THEY WOULD FOLLOW THE SAME PROCESS OF DOING A BEGIN HIRE AND WE WOULD GO THROUGH AND DO BACKGROUND CHECKS AND FOLLOW OUR STANDARD, YOU KNOW, PROCESS.

SO THAT'S THE HIRING PROCESS.

AND BUT IT DOESN'T END THERE.

AND SO WE WOULD EMPLOY THEM UNDER A NON-CERTIFIED TEACHER CONTRACT WITH LANGUAGE THAT STIPULATES THE CONDITIONS OF THEIR EMPLOYMENT.

MANY OF THESE COURSES ARE THINGS WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE, AND IT'S TYPICAL OF AN ALT CERT PROGRAM TO PUT THOSE IN PLACE AS WELL.

SO WE WOULD IT WOULD BE WE WOULD BE WORKING WITH THE ALTERNATE PROGRAM AND HOW THEY ACTUALLY MATRICULATE THE STUDENT THROUGH THEIR PROGRAM.
