IF WE ONLY HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME WHERE WE KNOW WHAT THE FINANCIAL IMPACT FOR US IS GOING TO BE, THAT LEAVES US WITH VERY LIMITED OPTIONS AS FAR AS FINDING CHILD CARE IN AN AREA THAT'S GROWING RAPIDLY.
MY FIRST QUESTION IS WHY WAS THIS ANNOUNCED WITHOUT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TELLING US WHAT THE TUITION INCREASE IS GOING TO BE? IN THIS EMAIL, THEY SENT OUT A EFFECTIVELY A BROCHURE THAT COMPARES IT TO THE THREE MOST EXPENSIVE OPTIONS WITHIN THE AREA.
UM, AND THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION THAT YOU SEE BETWEEN THE TWO IS INSANE.
THE ELCS ARE ARE ADVERTISED TO EMPLOYEES AS BEING A FINANCIALLY SAFE OPTION FOR THE TEACHERS.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE CHEAPER FOR THEM.
BUT WHEN YOU ACTUALLY BREAK DOWN BY THE TIME YOU'VE GOT AT THE END OF IT WITH ALL THE FEES, THE SCHOOL SUPPLY FEES, THE LUNCHES, THE BREAKFAST, THE SNACKS, IT'S A VERY CLOSE COMPARISON WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE MORE EXPENSIVE OPTION, IT'S ABOUT A $200 A MONTH DIFFERENCE.
AND THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION YOU GET AT THOSE SCHOOLS IS SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT.
IF YOU LOOK AT WHAT'S OFFERED STEM PROGRAMS, DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS, DIFFERENT AREAS WHERE KIDS CAN EXPRESS THEIR INTEREST AND MAYBE FIND THAT CAREER INTEREST EARLY ON SOMETHING THAT IS NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE, BUT AT A PUBLIC SCHOOL WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FROM THE FROM THE YOUNGEST AGES, WHY IS NONE OF THAT OFFERED HERE YET? YOU WANT US TO START PAYING THAT LEVEL OF TUITION? WHAT ARE WE GOING TO GET FOR IT? WHY IS IT THAT ON TOP OF THE SCHOOL SUPPLY FEE OF $200 PER STUDENT, WHICH I HAVE NO PROBLEM PAYING, I WANT MY KIDS TO GET THE BEST EDUCATION.

I'M ALSO A PARENT, THOUGH, OF A STUDENT, ONE WHO'S CURRENTLY IN THE ELC PROGRAM, ONE WHO'S BEEN IN THE ELC PROGRAM UP UNTIL THIS YEAR, AND NOW SHE'S IN THE DISTRICT PRE-K PROGRAM. I'M ALSO HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT THE ELC TUITION RAISE, BUT I'M SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF MY FELLOW TEACHERS WHO QUITE FRANKLY ARE FEELING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. NONE OF US GOT INTO EDUCATION FOR THE MONEY.
WE ALSO WANT TO SEE THOSE VALUE OR THE VALUE PRESENTED TO OUR CHILDREN, JUST AS WE AS EDUCATORS ATTEMPT TO EVERY DAY GIVE YOUR STUDENTS A VALUABLE EDUCATION.

I WAS TOLD RECENTLY IN AN IMPROMPTU MEETING WITH MISS MARY NOBLE THAT IF TUITION DID NOT INCREASE IN JANUARY, THAT THE ELC PROGRAM WOULD BE ROUGHLY $92,000 IN THE HOLE.
AND SO IT COMES BACK ON US AS PARENTS SLASH EMPLOYEES TO PAY MORE TO MAKE UP THAT DIFFERENCE.
THE MATH IS NOT MATHING IF YOU WILL.
MY CHILDREN ARE BOTH AT CARPENTER HILL AND THROUGH THE ELC PROGRAM APPROXIMATE NUMBERS JUST FROM TUITION ALONE THIS YEAR IIF TUITION DID NOT INCREASE, THEY WOULD BE MAKING ROUGHLY $280,000 FROM TUITION ALONE.
THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE SUPPLY FEES.
IT ALSO DOES NOT INCLUDE ENROLLMENT FEES FOR NEW STUDENTS.
IF THOSE NUMBERS ARE ROUGHLY THE SAME AMOUNT ACROSS THE SEVEN ELC CAMPUSES, THAT EQUATES TO ROUGHLY $1.9 MILLION BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
SO MY QUESTION IS THIS, WHERE IS OUR MONEY GOING? BECAUSE EVERYBODY WANTS TO KNOW THAT.
WHERE'S OUR MONEY GOING? WHERE IS THE VALUE THAT WE SHOULD BE SEEING FOR THE AMOUNT THAT WE'RE PAYING? BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD BE MORE EXPENSIVE, I COULD SEND MY CHILD TO PRIMROSE THIS YEAR.

IT IS VERY OBVIOUS, BASED ON THE BASED ON THE PRESENTATIONS FOR THE NEW PROJECTS I WITNESSED LAST WEEK, THAT THIS SCHOOL BOARD IS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF HANDLING OPPORTUNITIES THAT MAY BE DISGUISED AS PROBLEMS OR OBSTACLES.
I SAT HERE WITH MY SON FOR FOUR HOURS AND LISTENED TO THE QUESTIONS THAT ALL OF YOU POSED FOR YOUR OTHER PRESENTERS, AND IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT YOU DO CARE ABOUT THINKING BIG AND TAKING ON COMPLEX ISSUES.
IN FACT, A FREQUENT THEME LAST WEEK WAS THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE, BUILD FOR THE FUTURE.
IT'S A GOOD, GOOD VIEW TO HAVE.

SO IF BOTH DISTRICTS HAVE NEARLY IDENTICAL NUMBERS AND PARTICIPATION AND WIMBERLEY HAS HAD A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE OVERALL AND HUTTO IS STRUGGLING ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE SIDE, THIS IS SIMPLY A MATTER OF POLICY IMPLEMENTATION AND EXECUTION.
AND NONE OF YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO OPTING IN.
AS I JUST STATED, THOSE NUMBERS, THERE'S ONLY BEEN FIVE IN BOTH DISTRICTS EVEN SCALING THOSE NUMBERS TO HAYS ISD ENROLLMENT NUMBERS, IT'S APPROXIMATELY 0.002% OF ENROLLMENT.
SO THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE, YOU KNOW, OF HOMESCHOOLERS TAKING UP SPACE.

AND HE IS IN 10TH GRADE MATH AND HE IS DOING A MATH COMPETITION THAT IS EVEN HIGHER THAN THAT.
SO FOR HIM, IT WAS THE BEST REASON.
HIS ALSO HIS EXTRACURRICULAR IS HE IS NOW A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIVE IRISH DANCER.
AND SO HE WE HAVE TO TRAVEL 3 TO 4 TIMES A YEAR INTERNATIONALLY FOR HIM TO COMPETE.
SO IN ORDER FOR US TO ACCOMMODATE THAT PASSION OF HIS AND HIS DREAM, WE HAVE TO HAVE THAT FLEXIBILITY SO IT WOULDN'T FIT WITHIN THE TRUANCY IN THE REQUIREMENTS OF SCHOOL. SO I'M HERE TO TO JUST SAY THAT I WOULD LOVE FOR HIM TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY WHEN HE IS OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE TO BE ABLE TO BE ON THE DEBATE TEAM OR THE MATH TEAM.

SO THAT BEING SAID, WE HAD A VERY CANDID DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW THAT WOULD BE MANAGED WITH HAYS COUNTY AND REALLY THE COMMITMENT FROM THE BOARD AS WELL AS THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE TO STAFF THOSE POSITIONS AS THEY COULD WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY DO HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF OPEN POSITIONS AS AS ALL OF OUR LOCAL POLICE AGENCIES DO AT THIS POINT. AND YOU'RE RIGHT, WE AS A DISTRICT ARE LUCKY AND THAT WE ENJOY VERY STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE CITY OF BUDA PD, THE CITY OF KYLE PD, CONSTABLE'S OFFICE, THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND OUR CONSTABLES.
AND SO I APPLAUD YOUR EFFORTS AND I FEEL SORRY FOR OTHER DISTRICTS AROUND THE STATE THAT ARE PROBABLY BEING CAUGHT FLAT FOOTED, DON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES, DON'T HAVE THE BUDGET, AND MAYBE HAVE PUT THIS ON THE BACK BURNER BECAUSE FRANKLY, THEY'RE TRYING TO PAY THEIR TEACHERS AND EDUCATE CHILDREN.

AND QUITE FRANKLY, THEY'VE GIVEN US AN UNFUNDED MANDATE WITH THE PASSAGE OF HB 3 WITH MINUSCULE FUNDING AND THEY EXPECT US TO COMPLY WITH HB 3. AND I DON'T BELIEVE THAT OUR KIDS OR PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHOULD BE USED AS POLITICAL PAWNS.
