SO I STARTED TO INQUIRE WHY. I'VE BEEN TOLD SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS, SO I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHEN THIS DECISION WAS MADE, WHO MADE THIS DECISION AND WHY WAS IT NOT PUSHED OUT TO PARENTS? BECAUSE IT'S NOT JUST AFFECTS ME. IT AFFECTS A LOT OF PARENTS WITH THIS JOINT CUSTODY DECISION.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TOLD ME I NEEDED TO PROVIDE COURT DOCUMENTS THAT SAID MY DAUGHTER AND MY EX-WIFE AND I HAD 50-50 JOINT CUSTODY, WHICH I DID. THEN I WAS SENT AN EMAIL SAYING THAT.
SO I ASKED IF I CHANGE MY DAUGHTER'S ADDRESS FROM MY HOUSE IN GARLIC CREEK SUBDIVISION TO WHISPER AND HOLLOW SUBDIVISION, WOULD MY DAUGHTER BE ALLOWED TO RIDE THE BUS? AND I WAS TOLD IT TAKES 1 TO 2 DAYS. AND I SAID AGAIN, MY QUESTION IS, IF I CHANGE HER ADDRESS TO WHISPER AND HOLLOW, CAN SHE RIDE THAT BUS? BECAUSE IN THE BEGINNING I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF STATE FUNDING, AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS BECAUSE OF OVERCROWDING BUSSES.

BOTH OF LANDON'S HOMES ARE WITHIN DISTRICT BOUNDARIES AND SERVED BY EXISTING BUS ROUTES.
UNTIL THIS YEAR, THE DISTRICT PROVIDED A PRACTICAL SOLUTION WHICH IS BUSSING INTO BOTH HOMES.
THE TASK REALLY IS SIMPLE TO GET LAND AND SAFELY TO AND FROM SCHOOL, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER STUDENT IN THE DISTRICT, AND STUDENTS OF SHARED HOUSEHOLDS REALLY DESERVE THE SAME CONSISTENCY AND ACCESS TO TRANSPORTATION AS THEIR PEERS.
WITH THE RECENT POLICY CHANGE THIS YEAR, THAT BASIC SERVICE WAS WITHDRAWN.
LIKE OTHERS AFFECTED, I REACHED OUT TO ADMINISTRATORS, MOST OF YOU, DOCTOR WRIGHT AS WELL.
AND I'VE COMMUNICATED, I'VE OFFERED LEGAL STANDING AND LEGAL ANALYSIS TO CLARIFY THAT THIS REQUEST, AGAIN, INVOLVES NO NEW STOPS, ROUTES OR ADDED STUDENTS, ONLY RECOGNITION OF A LEGITIMATE COURT ORDERED FAMILY STRUCTURE.
IT PLACES THESE CHILDREN AT AN UNFAIR DISADVANTAGE COMPARED TO PEERS IN SINGLE HOUSEHOLD FAMILIES.
IN ADDITION, IT FOSTERS A COMBATIVE ENVIRONMENT AMONG PARENTS WHO NOW FEEL PRESSURED TO HURRY UP AND RUSH TO GET THEIR STUDENT REGISTERED FIRST SO THAT THEY CAN RECEIVE THOSE BUS SERVICES. ULTIMATELY, THAT'S ADDING UNNECESSARY STRESS AND INEQUITY TO THE PROCESS.
BUT WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN A PRACTICAL PATH FORWARD FOR THE FAMILIES WHO ARE STILL, LIKE MYSELF AND LIKE MR. MORALES WHAT I'M ASKING IS, RESPECTFULLY, THAT THE BOARD CONSIDER TWO CLEAR ACTIONS, PLEASE.

OTHERS SAID THAT IT WAS FAKE. PARENTS WERE POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITHIN SECONDS, MINUTES.
CALLS WERE GOING TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WHO DIRECTED PEOPLE BACK TO THE SCHOOL, WHICH WASN'T ANSWERING, UNDERSTANDABLY. EVEN AS THE DISTRICT BEGAN SENDING UPDATES, PANIC WAS ALREADY THERE.

MANY PARENTS RUSHED TO THE CAMPUS TO TRY TO PICK UP THEIR CHILDREN.AND THAT CAN CREATE A REAL CONCERN. IN A TRUE EMERGENCY, THAT TRAFFIC COULD PUT FAMILIES, STAFF AND EVEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AT RISK. AS A MOM, I UNDERSTAND THAT INSTINCT.
THAT FIRST THOUGHT IS ALWAYS TO GO GET MY CHILD.
BUT AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER, I ALSO ASK, DID WE DO EVERYTHING WE COULD TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE? I DON'T WANT TO JUST STAND HERE POINTING OUT PROBLEMS. I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN AND SHOULD FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS.
I KNOW THERE'S FRUSTRATION IN OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT THE SHORTAGES AND COMPLIANCE WITH STATE LAW.
AS SOMEONE WHO SPENDS A LOT OF TIME ON OUR CAMPUSES AND WHO IS DEEPLY FAMILIAR WITH THE WORLD OF SCHOOL FINANCE, I UNDERSTAND THE DILEMMA. WE NEED SUSTAINABLE FUNDING.
AND JUST LIKE I WOULDN'T ASK THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT TO HIRE ALGEBRA TEACHERS.
THAT PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COUNTY IS CRUCIAL. BUT WHAT HAPPENED FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WE CAN ADDRESS NOW TOGETHER, AND THAT IS PARENT AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION. I KNOW THE DISTRICT HAS SOME INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE ABOUT THE STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOLS.
PARENTS NEED MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO ACTUALLY SEE, HEAR AND UNDERSTAND THAT INFORMATION.
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE IF SCHOOLS AND THE DISTRICT SHARED THOSE RESOURCES ON SOCIAL MEDIA MORE FREQUENTLY, OR HOSTED SAFETY NIGHTS WHERE PARENTS COULD LEARN DIRECTLY FROM ADMINISTRATORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT? WHAT IF PARENTS WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE QUICK REFERENCE GUIDES EACH SEMESTER WITH TERMS EXPLAINED? THESE ARE SMALL STEPS THAT COULD HAVE A BIG IMPACT BECAUSE RIGHT NOW MOST OF THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE ARE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PARENTS? WHAT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY? PARENTS NEED CLARITY TOO. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOLD, A SECURE AND A LOCKDOWN? WHAT KINDS OF SITUATIONS TRIGGER THOSE RESPONSES? BECAUSE OUR FIRST INSTINCT GOES TO AN ACTIVE SHOOTER, WHAT SHOULD WE DO OR NOT DO WHEN WE GET THAT TEXT FROM OUR CHILD? HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OUR KIDS AFTER A LOCKDOWN DRILL? THESE ARE QUESTIONS I HEAR FROM PARENTS ASKING AGAIN AND AGAIN OUR COMMUNITY WITHIN THE LAST WEEK.
AND WHEN THOSE QUESTIONS GO UNANSWERED, FEAR AND PANIC FILL THOSE GAPS.
THAT DOESN'T COMPROMISE SECURITY. IT BUILDS TRUST, IT EASES CONCERNS, AND IN A REAL EMERGENCY, IT MAKES OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY STRONGER. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN IN THIS DISTRICT, AND LIKE EVERY PARENT IN THIS ROOM, MY DEEPEST HOPE IS THAT THEY'LL COME HOME SAFE EVERY SINGLE DAY.

AND SO OUR FOUNDATION BOARD IS WORKING REAL HARD TO MULTIPLY THAT AND KEEP UP WITH THIS FAST GROWTH.

WELL, MY GOAL WOULD BE THAT WE ARE AT A PLACE WHERE WE'RE WE'RE LIKE MANY OTHER FOUNDATIONS ACROSS THE STATE, NOT MANY, BUT THE ONES THAT WE THAT WE THAT WE LOOK TOWARDS THAT HAVE A BUDGET OF OVER $1 MILLION.
THAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL I'D LIKE FOR US TO DO.
AND SO IN THAT VEIN WHAT HOW I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY FINANCIAL THAT'S YOUR YOUR MISSION, RIGHT, IS TO RAISE FUNDS AND THEN PASS THAT ON TO THE DISTRICT TO BE STEWARDS WITH.
BUT I'M JUST KIND OF CURIOUS, WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS STORY? YOU THINK YOU KNOW, THAT YOU'VE SEEN IN TERMS OF WHAT A TEACHER IS IMPLEMENTED OR STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HOW THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO UTILIZE THE FUNDS THAT THE FOUNDATION HAS PROVIDED? ABSOLUTELY. I'M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT, BECAUSE MY PICK IS EVERYBODY BEHIND ME THAT KNOWS ME WILL KNOW WHAT STORY I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT BECAUSE IT'S MY FAVORITE. I ALWAYS BRING IT UP. BUT AND IT WAS ACTUALLY TWO YEARS AGO, ONE OF THE GRANTS THAT WE THAT WE GAVE WAS TO OUR SPECIAL ED, ONE OF OUR SPECIAL ED TEACHERS WHO ASKED FOR LIGHT BOARDS TO FOR HER CLASS, FOR HER KIDS WHO HAD CHALLENGES WITH SIGHT, WITH VISION, AND WHEN SHE WE GOT HER THE LIGHT BOARDS AND WHEN SHE IMPLEMENTED IT, SHE WROTE BACK AND TOLD US ABOUT A STUDENT WHO HAD NOT BEEN VERBAL THE ENTIRE TIME SHE'D BEEN WITH THEM, AND AFTER USING THE LIGHT BOARDS, WAS ABLE TO SAY THEIR ALPHABET, AND THEY BECAME VERBAL BY BY USING THEM.
AND I'M GETTING CHILLS, AS I'M SAYING THIS TO YOU, THAT MEANINGFUL CHANGE AND THAT THE QUALITY OF THAT ONE CHILD'S LIFE, IS EVERYTHING. YEAH. THEY WANT TO BE MORE INVOLVED, WHICH EQUATES TO MORE SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM, AND TO HAVE TO SEE THE WEIGHT PLATES WITH THE BRAND OF HAYS HAWKS. I MEAN, IT JUST MEANS A LOT.
IT HOLDS 300 KIDS, MULTIPLE SPORTS. BUT I MEAN, THIS EQUATES TO SUCCESS.
KIDS WANT TO GO AND WORK HARD AND THAT MAKES THEM WANT TO DO WELL IN THE CLASSROOM IN MANY CASES.
SO WE TALK ABOUT 100% HAYS. I THINK I JUST SAID, YOU KNOW, GREAT WORK, AND I KNOW THAT WE'RE LEARNING FROM THAT FIRST BUILD AND WHAT WE COULD BETTER DO AT JOHNSON AND LEHMAN BUT AGAIN, GREAT JOB FROM THE CONSTRUCTION TEAM.

AND SO IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT ERA NOW, AND BUT MAN, BEING INSIDE OF IT AND ACTUALLY JUST WATCHING THE, YOU KNOW, SOME OF OUR KIDS IN THERE THAT JUST HAPPENED TO BE THERE WITH US, AND THE LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT THAT THEY GOT OVER IT, AND HOW THAT IMMEDIATELY GENERATED COMMENTS OF, I CAN'T WAIT TO BE ON THIS CAMPUS AND PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS.

TO ME IT'S LIKE, OKAY, LIKE I GET IT NOW. I SEE THE BIG PICTURE OF LIKE, HOW DO WE ACTUALLY GET STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES THAT MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT THAT THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT THEY REALLY WANTED TO DO. AND SO THAT IS A PRETTY NEAT EXPERIENCE.
AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE COMMUNITY TO KIND OF GET A BETTER VIEW OF SOME OF THESE ONCE THEY GET COMPLETED AT JOHNSON AND LEHMAN, BECAUSE IT'S PRETTY AWESOME TO SEE HOW THE COMMUNITY HAS ENTRUSTED US WITH THESE FUNDS TO BUILD THESE FANTASTIC FACILITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND HOW THAT WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO OTHER SUCCESSES THAT WE SEE IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM SO I JUST WANT TO SAY, I MEAN, I'VE SEEN SOME OF YOUR TIMELINES BEFORE WHEN I'VE ASKED FOR UPDATES, AND THEY'RE ABOUT REALLY SMALL, WITH LIKE A THOUSAND LINES AND WORDS AND THERE'S LIKE COLOR CODING AND THEY START, STOP, START AND STOP.
