MY NAME IS GARY YOUNG, AND I AM THE FATHER OF TWO STUDENTS IN HAYS CISD, ONE AT CARPENTER HILL THAT'S ABOUT TO GO INTO DAHLSTROM, AND ONE THAT'S CURRENTLY AT DAHLSTROM ABOUT TO GO INTO JOHNSON.

IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT WE HAVE LOST OUR CHOIR DIRECTOR POSITION AT DAHLSTROM, AND I'M WONDERING WHAT THE REASON FOR CHOOSING TO DO THAT, BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THE PROGRAM AT JOHNSON, WHO IS SEEMINGLY GOING TO BE TAKING OVER THIS, IS HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING STUDENTS IN THAT PROGRAM, WHEREAS THE DAHLSTROM PROGRAM IS THRIVING.

AND THEY'RE BRINGING PEOPLE IN.

THERE'S KIDS THAT ARE COMING UP THAT ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS, AND IT SEEMS LIKE THERE WAS NO OTHER CHOICE THAN LOOKING AT WE'RE GOING TO JUST USE THE HIGH SCHOOL DIRECTOR AS THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR INSTEAD OF BASING IT ON MERIT AND TENURE.

AND THAT'S REALLY WHERE I'M AT, IS I'M CONCERNED THAT WE'RE NOT TAKING TIME TO LOOK AT WHAT THE PROGRAMS ARE DOING.

HOW THEY'RE FUNCTIONING, AND JUST GOING, OH, WELL, THE HIGH SCHOOL'S HERE.

WE'RE JUST GOING TO MAKE IT WORK WHERE THAT IS.

THAT'S JUST GOING TO BE HOW IT IS WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE.

THAT'S TROUBLING BECAUSE THE CHOIR PROGRAM AT DAHLSTROM IS VERY ACTIVE.

THEY'RE A VERY CLOSE-KNIT FAMILY, AND AS THOSE STUDENTS GO UP, THE STUDENTS THAT ARE BELOW THEM, THEY'RE FAMILY MEMBERS.

ARE GOING TO COME UP INTO THERE, AND THEY'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE WARES AS THEIR STUDENT DIRECTOR, AND NOW SUDDENLY THEY'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO BE SPLIT.

I THINK THAT'S, ESPECIALLY IN THE FINE ARTS PROGRAM, THAT'S CHALLENGING, AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE THAT WORK WHEN THERE'S SO MANY STUDENTS IN THE FINE ARTS PROGRAMS OR WHERE THEY'VE BEEN PROVEN TO BE HELPFUL IN TAKING SAT TESTS.

WE BUDGETED AT 93%, AND WE ARE AT 93.5%.

SO JUST A LITTLE BIT UP ON THE ATTENDANCE, SO HOPEFULLY WE CAN HOLD FIRM ON THE LAST, SOME OF Y'ALL ARE PROBABLY COUNTING, I THINK, 22 DAYS OF SCHOOL, MAYBE, SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

IS THAT CLOSE? YEAH.

ALL RIGHT, FIRST OF ALL, OUR CAREER TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HOSTED OUR HIGHER HAYS STUDENT JOB FAIR.

AND AS A PART OF OUR 100% HAYS, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS ARE AWARE, BUT THANK YOU.

SHORTLY AFTER I GOT HERE, I ASKED THE PRINCIPALS TO MAINTAIN A LIST OF ALL THE KIDS, ONCE THEY BECOME SENIORS, TO ANNOUNCE WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO GO TO COLLEGE, IF THEY'RE GOING TO GO INTO THE MILITARY, IF THEY ALREADY HAVE A JOB, AND THEN THE ONES THAT ARE UNDECIDED, WHICH FORTUNATELY, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE LIKE 1,800 GRADUATES THIS YEAR, AND ONLY 200 OUT OF THE ENTIRE DISTRICT WERE UNDECIDED.

NOW, I KNOW KIDS WILL CHANGE THEIR CAREER PATH MANY, MANY TIMES.

BUT I WAS IMPRESSED THAT WE ONLY HAD LIKE 200 KIDS THAT HADN'T ANNOUNCED.

SO WHAT OUR CTE DEPARTMENT DOES IS THEY MEET WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES AND EDUCATION PARTNERS, AND THEY BRING THEM IN.

AND THE KIDS COME WITH RESUMES, AND THEY BASICALLY INTERVIEW FOR INTERNSHIPS OR FOR JOBS.

AND SO IT'S VERY PRODUCTIVE.

AND AND YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF THE DIFFERENT COMPANIES IN THE SLIDES, BUT IT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THINGS THAT WE DO.

AND IT AT LEAST HELPS KIDS KIND OF THINK ABOUT WHAT THE NEXT STEPS ARE GOING TO BE.

AND SO IT WAS PRODUCTIVE.

WE WANT TO KEEP GROWING IT.

SO IF YOU GUYS OUT THERE KNOW MORE BUSINESSES THAT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ACCESS TO OUR KIDS AND POTENTIAL OR FUTURE EMPLOYEES, PLEASE, PLEASE LET US KNOW.

AND THEY HAD AN OPEN TEAM THAT GOT TO COMPETE IN STATE ON THE 18TH OF APRIL, WHICH IS JUST...

LAST WEEK AND THEY PLACED NINTH OVERALL SO CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HAYES WINTER GUARD AND THEN WE'LL MOVE TO THE JOHNSON WINTER GUARD THEY ADVANCED THE STATE ON THE 18TH AS WELL AND I HAVEN'T HEARD THE RESULTS FROM THEM MOVING ON TO THE LEHMAN WINTER GUARD THEY PLACED SIXTH IN AREA THEY ADVANCED THE STATE AND THEN AT STATE THEY PLACED EIGHTH IN THE STATE SO OUR WINTER GUARD IS STILL IMPRESSIVE AS THEY HAVE BEEN FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS.

THE GIRLS GOLF TEAM AT HAYS HIGH SCHOOL WAS THE DISTRICT CHAMPS AND THEY GOT TO ADVANCE TO THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT AND WE HAD ONE YOUNG LADY, DELANEY MCGURRAN, WHO WAS BACK TO BACK DISTRICT CHAMPS AND AT THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT SHE PUNCHED HER TICKET TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT AS A MEDALIST SO SHE ADVANCED TO STATE.

SO CONGRATULATIONS TO DELANEY.

AND JOHNSON GOLF WAS.

THE DISTRICT CHAMPS FOR BOYS, THEY MOVED ON TO THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT, AND I HAVEN'T GOTTEN AN UPDATE ON THEIR PERFORMANCE YET, SO I'LL GIVE YOU THAT WHEN I HEAR MORE.

THEY JUST DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THAT TEST AT DPS AT THE END, BUT THEY WOULD HAVE EVERY OTHER PART OF THAT TRAINING.

THEY WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A NON-DOT PHYSICAL, A NON-DOT DRUG SCREEN.

AND WE WOULD DO A NON-DOT RANDOM DRUG SCREEN TO MIMIC EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS WITH OUR CDL BUS DRIVERS AS WELL.

THEY ALSO ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE THAT TEXAS SCHOOL BUS CERTIFICATION THAT THEY HAVE TO GET BEFORE THEY CAN TRANSPORT ANY STUDENTS, AND THEN KEEP UP EVERY THREE YEARS AFTER THAT.

SO CURRENTLY, WE HAVE 217 TRIPS THAT CARRY SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS.
